Sand
Soft Sand
For general building and bricklaying.
Sharp Sand
Used for plastering and rendering and can be used as a lawn mulch, and additive with de-icing salt.
Flooring Sand
Course concreting sand for floor screeding and paving.
Silver Sand / White Sand (when available)
Used in children’s play pits and play areas, long jumps and recreation fields. (Less likely to stain clothes).
Ballast
A Mix of sharp sand and 10mm or 20mm shingle.
10mm (3/8) Ballast
Suitable for garden paths and fence posts. When mixed with cement, it can be used for shallow footings or retaining walls.
20mm (3/4) Ballast
Mainly used for mixing concrete for foundations and footings. Also used for forming concrete slabs as a base for conservatories, sheds, garages and extensions.
SHINGLE
The size describes the sieved state of the stone as it comes out of the quarry crushers.
4mm – 10mm
Perfect for path and driveway finishes.
10mm
Great for bedding pipes and armoured cabling, also for garden paths, driveways, and fence posts.
Mixed with sharp sand for a 10mm Ballast
Extremely versatile, can even be used as mulch to retain on borders and rockeries.
Also great for garden membrane coverage.
20mm
Mixed with sharp sand, a ballast is formed for concrete slabs as well as concrete foundations and footings.
20-40mm and Oversize Ungraded (40-300mm)
Often used for decorative purposes, under trees and on borders. Also very good for drains, cesspits, and soakaways.
You can also replace flints and stones in old walls with rejects.
Sub-base
MOT type 1 or crushed asphalt, crushed Bricks, crushed Concrete.
When compacted down it will form a solid base for a drive or pathway, or a concrete slab for an extension, garage or shed base.
MOT Type 1 Sub base
Can be either Recycled Type 1 or Primary Type 1 i.e Limestone, Granite or Slag (sourced from the blast furnace process of steel production).
